Narcoloth has lived to haunt our very existence since the beginning of man. His life source is none other than the individual or collective creativity of mankind. He is the ruler of the cerebral kingdom of Hypnagogia.

Hypnagogia is the semi-conscious state between wakefulness and sleep. It has been recognised for hundreds of years as a source of creative thought and intuition. In terms of brainwave patterns, Hypnagogia is the interval just preceding stage 1 sleep characterised by a slowing of the alpha rhythm (8 - 12 Hz) which then breaks up and is replaced by a slower and smaller amplitude theta rhythm (4 - 7 Hz).

At this state, very realistic images and sounds can be experienced. Although visual and auditory hallucinations are most common, experiences can range from hearing your name whispered to ones involving all the senses, including touch. These are believed to be dream images that are occurring while you are awake. These waking dreams can be bizarre and terrifying and as such are often referred to as night terrors. Also associated with Hypnagogia is temporary paralysis.

The above explanation of the phenomena as hallucinatory is just a vague rationalisation of the mere terrifying reality.

Narcoloth comes at night, exactly at the dawn of the Hypnagogic state, in order to harvest and feast on each one's creativity, which is then at its maximum. He often uses his feline companion Theta, or his enchanting whispers in order to seduce and paralyse his victims, in the same fashion as a spider paralyses an insect before devouring it.

What's left are just some fragments of creative thought, which if not instantly recorded upon waking, fade into oblivion.

Hypnagogia indeed gives rise to the insight that there are many realities and that what we call wakefulness merely constitutes one of them. It suggests the evolutional possibility of a further expansion of consciousness, and poses a serious question concerning the nature of reality.
